Hello HAWKS Families,

We are excited to share with you our Quarter 4 goal to ensure we end the school year successfully and strong. We know the power of working together as a campus with our families and we invite you to join us to support this goal. YES Prep Northwest “Chasin’ the A”.

What is “Chasin’ the A”?

“Chasin the A” is our campus’ multi-level approach to ensure our students are set up for success, prepared, confident, and ready to take on upcoming tests ie STAAR, and end of year exams, including AP, for next year’s classes and grade level placement.

Our “Chasin the A” action plan includes focus on attendance, student mastery of skills in each subject, bringing focus and awareness to student’s current grades and academic performance, student and family communications and tutorials.

How can I help my student “Chase the A”?

Ways you can assist this goal include:

Staying connected to our multiple mediums of communication including campus phone calls, emails, letters sent home via your student or via mail, social media (Instagram:YES Prep Northwest Facebook: YES Prep Northwest Secondary) and family notes.

Reading, signing and returning letters sent home to the school in a timely manner to ensure communication was received.

Checking in with your student about their progress, completion of assignments and supports needed in each course.

Encouraging strong study practices and creating an environment for learning in the home (limited distractions, designated time for reading or homework, language that promotes a growth mindset)

Checking in with your student about Northwest initiatives and incentives (Subject Mastery Reward Tracker, Grade level incentives etc)

Keeping key test dates on your calendar to ensure your student is prepared and present on exam day.

Important dates for “Chasin’ the A”

4/3 – Common Assessment grade letters sent home. Students will need to return this letter to their ELA teacher by 4/7.

4/14 –Failure At-risk letters sent home. Students will need to return this letter to their ELA teacher by 4/17.

4/14- Attendance At-risk letters sent home. Students will need to return this letter to their ELA teacher by 4/17.

PSAT will be held both AM and PM (2 groups) on April 18th:

PSAT is now optional for YES Prep and funding comes directly from the main school budget - given the importance for scholarship and college readiness level. We managed to get approved and purchase exams for our 1st Quartile of students Class of 2025.

100% of Course Requests completed for all grade levels:

8th Grade 100%

9th Grade 100%

10th Grade 100%

This means that course requests have been submitted and AP requests are being reviewed. If teacher made recommendations - then students have been placed in the AP courses. What's Next?

April 28th - 8th to 10th grade - 5:15 to 6pm

Mandatory Parent Meeting (for students that were recommended for AP and decided to request regular courses, as well as for students that requested AP courses and were not placed on AP).

Optional Meeting for parents of students that requested and or were recommended for AP and were placed on AP as requested.

Senior Signing Day - May 18th at NRG Stadium:

8th grade to 10th YPNW grade will be attending the event in the afternoon (half a day ONLY) 12:45 - 2:45PM

9th Grade-Topic

The last two weeks lesson was on Anatomy. Students completed Journal Activities in workbooks provided by our presenter. Students will keep the workbooks at school until the end of the program where they will have the opportunity to take them home. Feel free to ask your students about what they learned in relation to this topic.

10th Grade-Topics

The first session was on Anatomy and second session was on Gender Stereotypes. On Wednesday, 4/12- the topic was Birth Control. Students did not have a workbook but engaged in active dialogue via a post-it note question activity, wrote down information they learn, and created long-term goals for themselves. Feel free to ask your students about what they learned in relation to these topics.

Planned Parenthood is hosting a Teen VIBE Summit, in June 2023, both in-person and virtual options. Reach out to your High School Counselor, Mrs. Troncoso for more information.

Not only have students proven they can wear these particular items without abusing the privilege,

The purpose of this incentive is also to…

  • Remain competitive with local school districts while also keeping YES Prep Values true
  • Aligned to things you’ve already purchased for your student
  • Provide individuality of dress within reason

Guardians, please see the slide below that will be shown to students during homeroom for reference. If you have any questions, please reach out to our Dean of Students, Mrs. Arnold at Krystle.Arnold@yesprep.org

High School Only:

Students who have 18+ unexcused absences during any semester for any course, as a result of excessive absences, will receive a NG (“No Grade”) notation on their report card at the end of each semester. The NG notation hides your student’s grades due to a lack of attendance. Your student may not be failing the course, but they have failed to meet state attendance requirements, so they could not receive a grade. House Bill 5, an updated regulation passed by the Texas Legislature, outlines standards of promotion and graduation to include attendance. The school considers students who miss more than 10% of class time as “excessive, unexcused absences”. Student may correct this notation on their report card by one of the following:

1.       Repeating the course - if student failed multiple courses

2.      Attending credit recovery - if student failed 1 -2 courses

3.      Completing attendance recovery - if student passed the course but failed to meet attendance standards

More information around enrolling your student into credit recovery or attendance recovery will be released in February. Attendance is very important in ensuring the success of your student both academically and socially. We are here to support both you and your students in intervening with their excessive absences to ensure they are successful and on track for promotion and graduation. If your student is absent from school, please ensure that you bring a note to the front office. If you have any questions regarding this information, please reach out to our Director of Student Support , Ms. Jones (Carey) at brittney.jones@yesprep.org

We must notify families when a student misses a certain amount of school if you received a letter from us this week (or next) - this is a notice for your records. There are two possible actions you can take:

lf you received a letter from us this week (or next) - this is a notice for your records. There are two possible actions you can take:

  1. Provide the school with an excuse note on the days your student was absent
  2. If you believe the absence is an error, email askypnorthwest@yesprep.org or call the front office to notify
    • You may also review students' attendance via Skyward!

Attendance matters, ensure the student is present and on time daily. We understand an array of situations can happen that can prevent the student from attending, we ask that the student advocates for themselves and get the missing work from their teachers ahead of time or when they return.

School Attendance Policy and Procedures:

  • A student is considered absent when missing 20 minutes of class for any period

  • Families should provide an excuse note once the student returns to campus (the student should turn it into the Front Office)
  • Excuse notes = Doctors/Clinic documentation or the guardian can email (askypnorthwest@yesprep.org) or provide a handwritten letter
    • Excuse note MUST include student's full name, date(s) missed, and the reason for absence
